Else Brauneis

Else Brauneis (born April 24, 1877 in Vienna ; † January 3, 1959 ) was a painter .

Life

She was born in Vienna as the daughter of court attorney Brauneis. After her parents' death in 1890, she lived with her mother's sister, Lieutenant Colonel Helene Schickhardt in Munich. From 1893 to 1897 she studied at the Royal School of Applied Arts in Munich , where she then became a teacher of performing geometry and perspective . Two years later she took over the library service of the female department there. In 1903 she became an assistant to Professor Max Kleiber .

In addition to her assistant and library service, she studied textile design from 1905 to 1909 at the teaching and experimental workshops for applied and fine arts at the Debschitz School . In 1916 she took over library service in the larger male department of the library at the Munich School of Applied Arts. In 1920 she became a teacher and in 1923 an associate professor at the Munich School of Applied Arts. From 1909 to 1915 she also studied watercolor and drawing at the private art school C. Kempter .

In 1920, Brauneis was appointed student councilor and finally in 1923 extraordinary professor at the Munich School of Applied Arts.

In 1946 the School of Applied Arts was merged with the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. Else Brauneis was taken over and was therefore professor of painting, perspective and performing geometry at the academy from 1946 to 1948. She was the first female professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich . However, by order of the military government in 1946, she was relieved of her teaching activities. Their task was to rebuild the library.

In 1948 Brauneis retired at the age of 71.

Mentions in art

Her student Berta Hummel portrayed her as a “lady in blue”. The former director of the Carl Sattler School of Applied Arts dedicated a plate to her, which is now in the architecture museum of the Technical University of Munich .

In the Münchner Neue Nachrichten of May 23, 1939, there is an exhibition review of a special exhibition by Prof. Else Brauneis on the occasion of the picture show at the Munich Art Association. There she showed watercolors and drawings.
