Else Wohlgemuth , married Countess von Thun and Hohenstein (born January 1, 1881 in Berlin , † May 30, 1972 in Vienna ) was a German actress.

Else Wohlgemuth was one of the great actresses at the Vienna Burgtheater . She had her first success in 1910 as Anna in Richard III. to celebrate. She received the title of court actress in 1913. In 1935 Wohlgemuth became an honorary member of the house and received the Burgtheaterring.

In 1938 she had to emigrate after the “Anschluss” of Austria .

After returning from exile , she played again in all the great female characters from 1945: Iphigenia , Sappho , Desdemona , Minna von Barnhelm , Leonore in The Fiesco Conspiracy in Genoa . The title role in Maria Stuart was her coronation. Ernst Haeusserman writes in his book about the Burgtheater: “The born queen of the classical repertoire, so to speak”. She shaped the style of performance, which was solemn at the time, majestic, with grace and the restrained pathos in her voice.

At Christmas 1916 Else Wohlgemuth received the series of poems “Tasso to the Princess”, which is dedicated to her, from the young Hans Kaltneker .

Wohlgemuth was married to Count Emmerich von Thun and Hohenstein (1876–1957) since April 30, 1918 .

She found her final resting place in the Hietzingen cemetery . In 1982, Wohlgemuthgasse in Vienna- Donaustadt (22nd district) was named after her. Your estate is in the St. Pölten city ​​archive.
