Emanuel Maeß

Emanuel Maeß (* 1977 in Jena ) is a German writer . He was awarded the Mara Cassens Prize in 2019 for his debut novel Gelenke des Lichts .

Life

Emanuel Maeß studied politics and literature in Heidelberg , Vienna and Oxford .

He gained fame as an author in German-speaking countries in 2019 with his debut novel Gelenke des Lichts , which was published in the spring by the Wallstein publishing house in Göttingen . An excerpt from the story of inwardness from the rural GDR from 1980 to the early 2000s, shown using the example of a young pastor's son, his childhood love and his intellectual development, was already available in 2017 under the title Werra und Wehr. Memories of Urspring appeared in the literary magazine Sinn und Form .

The novel Gelenke des Lichts was awarded the Mara Cassens Prize in 2019, was nominated for the Franz Tumler Literature Prize and was on the long list of the German Book Prize . The book prize jury praised Maeß 'work for its playful "lightness and depth" and described Joints of Light as a "linguistic novel" and an unconventional "magic hybrid of educational , rogue and campus novel ". Gustav Seibt ( Süddeutsche Zeitung ) praised Maeß's romantic tone and sees geographical references to Eckhard Henscheid's novel Maria Schnee - Eine Idylle (1988) and Adalbert Stifter's descriptions of the landscape .

Emanuel Maeß counts Marcel Proust , Jean Paul , Fernando Pessoa , Rainer Maria Rilke and Eckhard Henscheid among his literary role models.

He lives as a freelance writer in Berlin .
