Opened in 1966, the Embalse de Mequinenza (also called Mar de Aragón ) reservoir is the largest reservoir in the Spanish region of Aragon . It lies in the province of Zaragoza , but also touches the province of Huesca , and dams the Ebro river to Caspe . The reservoir is located in the municipal areas of Mequinenza in the Comarca Bajo Cinca and of Caspe and Chiprana in the Comarca Bajo Aragón-Caspe . The reservoir Pantà de Riba-roja (Embalse de Ribarroja) joins the river downstream .
history
The construction of the dam of Mequinenza began in 1955, the dam in 1965. During the construction of the dam, the town of Mequinenza was demolished and it was rebuilt elsewhere. Hundreds of residents emigrated, mainly to the major cities of Zaragoza and Barcelona .
fauna
The reservoir is rich in fish with stocks of carp and bleak and some predatory fish such as the European catfish , the largemouth bass , the pikeperch and the river perch . The migrating mussel has recently established itself . Gray herons , kingfisher , night heron and mallard can also be found at the lake .
tourism
Sport fishing is important for tourism. Water sports are represented with several marinas and landing stages.
