Emil Flohri (born October 27, 1869 in Roanoke , Virginia , † December 24, 1938 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American cartoonist , illustrator and painter .

Emil Flohri was born on October 27, 1869 in the city of Roanoke, Virginia, and at the age of 16 came as an illustrator for Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper , founded by Frank Leslie in 1855 , later also known as Leslie's Weekly . He then worked for the news magazine for decades as a political cartoonist and illustrator in Washington, DC He is said to have met the then US President William McKinley in 1900 with his cartoon Full Dinner Pail , which also became a slogan of the campaign at the time the Republican won reelection. For many years he also published his works in Judge magazine. After more than three decades as a political cartoonist and illustrator, he came to Los Angeles in 1920, two years before Leslie's Weekly was discontinued , where he made numerous portraits of film stars of the time. In the 1930s he also worked as a draftsman on numerous cartoons; In 1928 he came to the Disney Studios . In 1934 he was also one of the cartoonists in the musical film The Lions of Hollywood .

On December 24, 1938, Flohri died at the age of 69 in his home at 3933 Dixie Canyon in Van Nuys , a borough of Los Angeles. He was buried on December 27, 1938 at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale , California. The service took place on the same day at St. Thomas' Episcopal Church . His wife Carol (nee Schlich; 1874–1952) survived him almost to the day by 14 years, died on December 21, 1952 and was buried at his side. The two left their daughter, Virginia Flohri (1893–1974), who was a not insignificant opera singer ( soprano ).
