Emil More

Emil Josef Mehr (born October 27, 1909 in Untermais ; † April 19, 1988 in Mogelsberg ; resident in Menznau ) was a Swiss painter , draftsman , mosaicist and art teacher .

life and work

Emil Mehr attended schools in Sirnach and then did an apprenticeship as a decorative painter in his father's business . He was promoted by the painter Karl Peterli at the trade school in Wil SG .

After completing his apprenticeship, he attended the Zurich School of Applied Arts . a. Taught by Karl Otto Hügin, Ernst Tobler and Jakob Gubler. 1932/1933 studied Mehr at the Académie Lhote with André Lhote and Charles Blanc and took private lessons with Simon Lévy (1886–1973).

In between he worked as a decorative painter. Working together with Karl Hügin enhanced his knowledge of fresco painting . Study trips to Italy , France and Austria followed. In 1940 Mehr was appointed to the Zurich School of Applied Arts. He was married to the artist Hanny Strittmatter, who also taught at the Zurich School of Applied Arts.

Mehr received a federal art grant in 1947, 1948 and 1949 . He exhibited his works a. a. in the Kunsthaus Zürich , Helmhaus Zürich, Kunstmuseum Bern , Kunsthalle Bern and the Kunstmuseum Luzern .
