Oskar von Kirchner

Emil Otto Oskar von Kirchner (born September 15, 1851 in Breslau , † April 25, 1925 in Venice ) was a Silesian-Prussian , German botanist and phytomedicist . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is “ Kirchn. "

Live and act

Kirchner, the son of a law firm, attended the Maria Magdalenen grammar school in his hometown from 1861 until he graduated from high school in 1869 . He then studied botany at the University of Breslau and received his doctorate there in 1874 with a thesis on the botanical writings of the Greek philosopher and naturalist Theophrast (Theophrastus of Eresos). He then worked at the Pomological Institute of the Agricultural Academy Proskau . In 1877 he went to Hohenheim and became an assistant at the semen testing institute opened in 1878. From 1881 to 1917 he was a full professor of botany at the Hohenheim Agricultural Academy .

In 1884 he was accepted into the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .

In addition to his varied botanical studies, especially in the field of flower biology , Kirchner devoted himself particularly intensively to the diseases of cultivated plants . Of his numerous writings on this subject and on the practice of plant protection in agriculture, his book The diseases and damage of our agricultural crops , the first edition of which appeared in 1890, should be emphasized. From 1916 until his death Kirchner published the magazine for plant diseases and galling .

Honors

In 1917 he became an honorary member of the Association for Patriotic Natural History in Württemberg . The Hohenheim Agricultural University awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1922.

The algae species Kirchneria Hindák , Kirchneriella Schmidle and Kirchneriellopsis Kuff are named after Kirchner . , Kirchneriellosaccus A.K. Islam and Pseudokirchneriella Hindák .
