Towards the end of 1885 he left the management of the machine factory, but remained on its board of directors for a few more years.

Emil Keßler was a member of the national liberal German party . From 1871 to 1874 he sat in the German Reichstag . He represented the constituency of Württemberg 5 ( Oberamt Esslingen , Oberamt Nürtingen , Oberamt Kirchheim , Oberamt Urach ). Since January 9, 1883, he had held a mandate for the Esslingen Oberamt in the Württemberg Chamber of Deputies , which he resigned in December 1885 for health reasons after almost three years.

Emil Keßler married Marie Kienlin in 1867 . The only child from this relationship died in 1878. Emil von Keßler had lived in Baden-Baden since 1893, where he died two years later. His grave is in Esslingen am Neckar.
