Engelbrekt is a wood-fired passenger steamer from 1866.
history
The ship was built in 1866 for Mora Ångbåts AB at Lindholmens shipyard in Gothenburg and named Mora . The Mora was delivered in parts by the shipyard for final assembly in Mora and was intended for traffic on the lakes Siljan and Orsasjön and the river Österdalälven on the Mora- Insjön route to replace the old Prins August . The maiden voyage took place in the spring of 1867.
In 1884 the railway to Insjön was put into operation. At first, this was advantageous for steam navigation, because it increased the number of tourists who wanted to visit the Siljan Lake area. In 1890, however, the railway line from Falun to Rättvik was put into operation and offered a connection to Mora in 1891 and to Orsa in 1892 . This considerably reduced the number of passengers on the steamers.
The Mora was drastically rebuilt in the Övermo shipyard in 1902–1903 , only the keel and the frames of the older ship were taken over. The drive was replaced by an 80 HP composite steam engine from the mechanical workshops in Härnösand and the ship was named Engelbrekt , which referred to the Swedish rebel Engelbrekt Engelbrektsson .
The ship sank in the port of Leksand in the winter of 1949–1950 and was salvaged in 1952. It was then used in Leksand as a floating, non-propelled summer house and completely renovated in 1996. From 1996 the ship was used again for passenger trips. It is operated by the steamship company Ångfartygs AB Engelbrekt and is owned by the Skrufångfartyget Engelbrekts Vänförening association . It is the second largest historical passenger ship in Sweden.
The ship is low enough to pass under the railway bridges in Leksand and Mora, which only need to be opened for larger ships.
Restoration and current use
The Skrufångfartyget Engelbrekts Vänförening association was founded in 1993 and received the ship as a gift from the previous owners, as well as a composite steam engine from the chain ship Ore Elf , which had been saved from the scrap. Most of the parts of the hull dating from the 1860s have been preserved. Only 70 m² of the original fuselage panels had to be replaced, primarily panels in the area of the change aisle . The entire renovation only took two years. The Engelbrekt is now in summer in cruise traffic for the steamship company Ångfartygs AB Engelbrekt in Leksand and once a week also on the Leksand-Mora route. There are also trips downstream on the Dalälven River from Leksand to Grada .
