history

The area around Enisala has been inhabited for thousands of years. A settlement of the Gumelnitza culture and another from the Iron Age were discovered in the immediate vicinity . During the Phanariot period the place was called Heracleeia , the Romans called it Vicus Novus (New Village). The current name Enisala arose under Turkish rule - where “yeni” means new and “sale” means village, settlement. Romanians , Greeks , Bulgarians , Tatars , Turks , Lipovans and Circassians have lived here for centuries . The main attraction of Enisala is the medieval fortress.

Enisala Fortress

The fortress Enisala was built in the 14th century at the behest of the imperial authorities from Byzantium . It served military and administrative purposes. From 1338 to 1417 it was under the rule of the Wallachian prince Mircea the Elder . In 1417 it was conquered by the Ottoman Sulten Mehmed I and served the Turks as a military garrison.

Today, Enisala is the only remaining medieval fortress in Dobruja. As a result of the Russo-Ottoman wars , the Russian generals had all the Ottoman military bases destroyed about 200 years ago. Enisala escaped this fate as it had lost its strategic function many years earlier and was abandoned.
