Enrico Orfei

Enrico Orfei (born October 23, 1800 in Orvieto , † December 22, 1871 in Ravenna ) was a cardinal of the Roman Church .

Career

He was the son of Giuseppe Orfei and his wife Colomba Duranti, his paternal great-uncle Nicola Orfei was archdeacon at the cathedral of Bagnoregio .

Orfei attended the seminary of S. Andrea in Orvieto and was ordained a priest on December 20, 1823 . He then studied dogmatics and moral theology at the Jesuit college of Orvieto . He attended the University of Perugia and completed his studies on November 15, 1832 with the degree of Doctor iuris utriusque . As early as 1831 he was a canon at the Church of Ss. Andrea e Bartolomeo in Orvieto; on June 1, 1831 he was by Gregory XVI. appointed papal chamberlain . In 1833 he became the house prelate of His Holiness and held various positions in the Roman Curia and the administration of the Papal States . On September 11, 1848, Pope Pius IX appointed him Bishop of Cesena . He was ordained bishop on September 17, 1848 by Cardinal Vincenzo Macchi ; Co-consecrators were the Archbishops of the Curia Girolamo d'Andrea and Domenico Lucciardi . Orfei became Papal Assistant to the Throne on October 3, 1848 .

Pope Pius IX created Orfei in the consistory of March 15, 1858 cardinal and appointed him on March 18 of the same year cardinal priest of Santa Balbina . On March 23, 1860 he was made Archbishop of Ravenna . As such, he was a participant in the First Vatican Council from 1869 to 1870 .

He died on December 22, 1871 in Ravenna and was buried in the family chapel in Casemurate .
