Enrique Chagoya

Enrique Chagoya (born September 23, 1953 in Mexico City , Mexico ) is a Mexican-born American painter, graphic artist and university teacher .

Life

Chagoya was partly raised by an Indian nanny, through whom he was taught the Indian traditions of his country from an early age. He studied economics at the National Autonomous University of Mexico and during this time worked on various development projects in rural Mexico.

In 1977 Chagoya emigrated to the USA with his wife, where he initially worked as an illustrator and graphic artist. In 1984 he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) from the San Francisco Art Institute and received a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in 1987 from the University of California, Berkeley . In 1995 he was Artist in Residence in Giverny , France, in Claude Monet's House and Garden , and in 1999 in Paris in the Cité internationale des arts Paris .

Chagoya lives in San Francisco , California . He became a citizen of the United States in 2000. Since 1998 he has been Dean and Professor of the Faculty of Art and Art History at Stanford University .
