The Ensemble Amarcord (spelling: amarcord ) is a vocal ensemble from Leipzig . Today it is one of the leading vocal ensembles.

history

The ensemble was founded in November 1992 by three former and three active members of the St. Thomas Choir . It had its first non-public appearance on December 12, 1992 in what was then the Gästehaus am Park in Leipzig. The first concert took place on April 18, 1993 in Kohren-Sahlis , the 1000th in April 2009.

The ensemble first performed in October 1993 under the name Amarcord (which means “I remember” in the Emilia-Romagna dialect ).

Based on the idea of ​​celebrating their 5th anniversary together with other singers, the musicians initiated the International Festival for Vocal Music "a cappella" in 1997 , which under the artistic direction of the group has developed into one of the most important festivals of its kind.

The singers have now performed concert tours in over 50 countries on all continents of the world.

repertoire

The repertoire includes chants from the Middle Ages , madrigals and masses from the Renaissance , compositions and work cycles from European Romanticism and the 20th century, as well as a cappella arrangements of folk songs and well-known songs from rock, pop, soul and jazz.

Awards

The work of the ensemble has been recognized with numerous national and international awards. Amarcord received prizes at the music competitions in Tolosa, Spain (2nd prize, 1995), in Tampere, Finland (joint 3rd prize 1999) and at the 1st Choir Olympiad in Linz, Austria (2000). In 2000, the singers were included in the Federal Selection of Concerts of Young Artists of the German Music Council and received a scholarship. In 2002 they won the German Music Competition , in 2004 the price of the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Festival .

In 2002 and 2006 amarcord received the Contemporary A Cappella Recording Award (CARA) in the categories “Best Classical Album” and “Best Classical Song”, the album “Restless Love - A Walk through Romantic Leipzig” won the Best award classical album in 2010. The same album was also awarded the ECHO Klassik 2010 in the category choral work recording of the year - choir / ensemble music 18./19. Century and the Luxembourg Supersonic Award ( Pizzicato ), and at the beginning of 2010 nominated for the MIDEM Classical Award, the most important prize in European record criticism. In 2012, the ensemble received another ECHO Klassik in the Ensemble of the Year category - vocal music for the album Das Lieben brings great 'Freud!

In 2019, amarcord and the Calmus Ensemble Leipzig received an Opus Klassik in the category "Choral work recording" for their joint recording of the Leipziger Disputation , u. a. with the twelve-part mass by Antoine Brumel , which is said to have been heard in 1519 on the occasion of the Leipzig disputation .
