The Entsorgungsbetriebe Essen GmbH (short EBE ) was founded in 1998 in Essen and started operations in 1999. In addition, the EBE operates its own container service that operates on the private market.

history

Municipal organization

After the development of the automobile, the municipal vehicle fleet was opened in Essen in 1871. In addition to storing the automobiles, the vehicle fleet department was also responsible for waste disposal. From 1915 onwards, the streets were cleaned with sweepers , which prompted the Krupp company to provide disposal vehicles in 1920 . During the Second World War , depots were destroyed, which then had to be rebuilt. After the completion of the new facility, the new depot was inaugurated in 1955 on Elisenstrasse. The assignment was further expanded in 1963, as the city with the energy company RWE , the energy from waste plant Essen-Karnap built. The energy generated during incineration was returned to the household. In the following year, the collection of bulky waste was offered.

Company outsourcing

In 1998, the company Entsorgungsbetriebe Essen GmbH was founded and thus replaced the city office 70 (the classic municipal waste collection). The city of Essen owns 51 percent of the shares through the Essener Versorgungs- und Verkehrsgesellschaft (EVV) mbH holding company. The remaining 49 percent is now held by Remondis Kommunale Dienst West GmbH. The company's headquarters were also relocated: a new central point for administration and vehicle fleet was created in Essen's northern district on what is now the Krupp belt . In the triangle between today's ThyssenKrupp headquarters, Essen city center and the newly developed New Center, EBE is now located in a strongly upgraded and up-and-coming district of Essen with its focus on garbage collection and cleaning. The container service is located in the north on Stauderstraße.

tasks

Garbage disposal

The city commissioned the disposal of domestic waste for all households , large corporations and businesses . This happens at regular intervals and takes place according to a schedule for currently three types of garbage can (residual waste, paper, organic). The daily household waste disposed of in the city of Essen is estimated by the company at 735 tons.

Gray bin

The gray garbage can is emptied on a weekly basis. If the emptying date is postponed due to public holidays, emptying is usually postponed by one day. In addition to the bin, it is possible to buy a rubbish bag from the city of Essen.

Brown barrel

The so-called organic bin for garden and green waste is emptied every two weeks if the owner has placed it on the side of the road (partial service).

Blue bin

Since 2004, the blue bins for cardboard and paper, which are free for private households, have been emptied every four weeks. In addition or as an alternative, numerous depot containers for waste paper can be used in the city area.

Depot container

There are depot containers at central locations in the Essen districts. These are provided for glass, waste paper, clothing and shoes.

City cleaning

The EBE is responsible for the entire city cleaning. This includes street, green and often special cleaning such as B. at carnival, at city festivals or the Christmas market, the winter service and the lavish autumn foliage collection. All public streets and squares in Essen are cleaned by the EBE in accordance with the street cleaning statute. In addition, some employees are deployed in weed control and cleaning the median.

Green space cleaning

The green areas or playgrounds that are to be cleaned of rubbish are named "Grün & Gruga" and specify how often they should be cleaned. This work has been carried out since July 1, 2000. Since 2013 there has also been summer Sunday cleaning in nine large Essen parks so that visitors can relax and enjoy the greenery without leaving any leftovers from the previous evening.

Special cleaning

Special cleaning takes place after or during major events such as B. Rose Monday parades, Christmas market , street festivals, special projects (e.g. Still-Leben Ruhrschnellweg ) and the Love Parade 2007 .

Winter service

The spreading and clearing service is carried out according to urgency. Important junctions in the infrastructure will be cleared first, including some federal and state roads on behalf of North Rhine-Westphalia. These so-called A-plans are operated on a 24-hour standby. The side streets (B-plans) are served between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m.

Bulky waste

To have the bulky waste picked up, you can contact EBE by phone, email or post and get an appointment. Bulky waste in normal household quantities is collected free of charge, including bulky household items that can be transported by hand, that do not fit into the gray garbage can, damage it or make it difficult to empty. Large electrical appliances and scrap are also considered bulky waste. Since 2015, larger plastic parts have also been taken along in order to facilitate the separate collection of this substance in accordance with the law. Bulky waste is picked up from the roadside and from public areas, but is not carried out of households.

Bulky waste can also be handed over to recycling stations free of charge.

Recycling stations

The EBE has two recycling yards ( Altenessen and Werden ) and four recycling stations in Essen . A distinction is made between free (e.g. electric stove , batteries ) and chargeable (e.g. waste oil and asbestos cement ).

Container service

EBE operates its container service from its Stauderstraße location in the north of Essen.
