Enzo Boschi ( February 27, 1942 in Arezzo - December 21, 2018 in Bologna ) was an Italian geophysicist . He was the founding president of the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia .

Life

Boschi studied physics at the University of Bologna , Cambridge , the CNRS , the California Institute of Technology and Harvard . In 1975 Boschi became a full professor of seismology in Bologna .

In 1982 he became a member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei and in 1992 of the Academia Europaea , as well as a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union in 1991 and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2002 . In 1981 Boschi received the Antonio Feltrinelli Prize . He was also a holder of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic (1991 Grand Officer, 2006 Grand Cross).

After the earthquake in Italy in 2009 , Boschi said that his institute had drawn up a risk map for the earthquake hazard; however, those responsible did not act. In 2012, a court sentenced him and other members of a panel of experts to six years in prison for negligent homicide. However, he did not have to serve his prison sentence and, like the other scientists, was acquitted in the last instance in 2015.

After the earthquake in central Italy in 2016 , Boschi stated: "In Italy, building is only done responsibly after an earthquake."
