history

The company was founded in 1945 by Heinrich Netheler and Hans Hinz in the Hamburg district of Eppendorf on the premises of the university hospital as a workshop for medical devices. Netheler and Hinz used their knowledge of radar technology to develop the first ultrasound device and the stimulator, a device for diagnosing and treating muscle and nerve damage. The electrical thermometer "Thermorapid" made it possible for the first time to measure body temperature within a few seconds. In 1963 the first microreaction vessel made of polypropylene - the "Eppi" - was produced. In 1965 the company with around 200 employees moved to its current headquarters in Barkhausenweg in the Hamburg district of Hummelsbüttel . In 1988 Klaus Fink took over the management of Eppendorf. "Eppendorf Gerätebau Netheler und Hinz GmbH" became "Eppendorf AG" in 2000, with all shares remaining in the possession of the founding families Netheler and Hinz.

With the takeover of New Brunswick Scientific in 2007 shakers , incubators , freezers and bioreactors were added to the range; since 2012 - after the purchase of DASGIP - the portfolio has been supplemented by parallel bioreactor systems and bioprocess data and information management software.

Eva van Pelt and Peter Fruhstorfer have been managing the Eppendorf Group as Co-CEOs since December 2019. They thus succeed Thomas Bachmann, who took over the chairmanship from Dirk Ehlers in 2015. In 2011, Ehlers replaced Klaus Fink, who had been chairman of the board for many years and who then took over as chairman of the supervisory board until 2016. Philipp von Loeper has been Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Eppendorf AG since 2016.
