Eric de Bisschop
Éric de Bisschop (born October 21, 1891 in Aire-sur-la-Lys , † August 30, 1958 in Rakahanga ) was a French adventurer, navigator and oceanist. He became known for his 1938-39 trip from Honolulu to France on board a Polynesian double canoe.
Life
He spent almost his entire life in the South Seas; from 1935 to 1937 and 1941 to 1947 in Honolulu, then until 1956 in Polynesia . In 1936 he built the Kaimiloa catamaran and toured three oceans with it. From Honolulu he made his way across the sea to Cannes. In addition, he wanted to prove by a raft trip that the Polynesians had already reached South America and had conducted cultural exchanges there. His bamboo raft Tahiti Nui , which was to take him from Tahiti to South America in 1957 , did not quite make the trip. The successor boat Tahiti Nui II took him from Peru to Tahiti and then to the Cook Islands . De Bisschop was fatally injured there.
