Erich Abram

Erich Abram (born June 13, 1922 in Sterzing ; † January 16, 2017 in Bozen ) was a South Tyrolean alpinist .

Abram was born in Sterzing, but grew up in Bolzano. During fascism he attended a catacomb school . In the option he chose the German Reich . In 1942 he had to serve on the Eastern Front as a soldier , and after the end of the war he was taken prisoner . He did not return to South Tyrol until 1948. There he quickly made a name for himself as a mountaineer . In the Dolomites he made many first ascents , for example on the Großer Zinne , Piz Ciavazes or the Rotwand . His reputation enabled him to be the only South Tyrolean to take part in the Italian expedition to K2 in 1954 . In the following first ascent of the eight-thousander by Achille Compagnoni and Lino Lacedelli , he played a decisive role. In later years, Abram flew numerous rescue missions as a helicopter pilot. In addition, his commitment was to train mountain rescuers and mountain guides . For his services he received honorary memberships in the Alpine Club South Tyrol and in the Club Alpino Italiano as well as the honorary citizenship of his hometown Bolzano.
