Erich Constein (born June 24, 1912 in Torgau ; † June 14, 1991 in Braunschweig ) was a German painter , sculptor and graphic artist .

life and work

Until 1923 Constein attended schools in Wongrowitz ( Province of Posen ), in Fürstenberg and in Frankfurt an der Oder , from 1924 to 1930 he was at a grammar school in Bad Harzburg . Between 1930 and 1934 he studied at the Braunschweig Art and Trade School (today's HKB ) a. a. with Günther Clausen .

In 1933 Constein joined the National Socialist German Student Union (NSDStB) and joined the SA . In 1934 he broke off his art studies and did voluntary military service; followed by various positions, e.g. B. between 1935 and 1939 as a graphic artist.

Between 1939 and 1945 Constein participated as a soldier of the Wehrmacht at the World War II in part: between 1939 and 1941 at the West Wall and in France and then to the war on so-called " Eastern campaign ."

In 1955 Constein returned to Germany from ten years of Soviet captivity . After various positions, he settled in Braunschweig with his wife and stepdaughter, where he initially worked as a graphic designer for the Braunschweiger Baugenossenschaft (BBG). a. whose logo designed.

From 1957 Constein worked as a freelance artist and took part with paintings and graphic artists in numerous exhibitions of the Federal Association of Visual Artists (BBK). He also created sculptures such as B. 1966 the "Swan Nest with Boys", a fountain for a shopping center in the Melverode district of Brunswick . The fountain consists of a bowl made of natural stone , in the middle of which there is a stele on which a swan driven on copper sits with its young in the nest. In 1971 Constein created the “fairy tale fountain” for the school and community garden on Dowesee , which is made entirely of scrap metal.

The Städtisches Museum Braunschweig dedicated an exhibition to him in 1982.
