Erich Koch (artist)
Erich Koch (born March 24, 1924 in Roßbach (Pfalz) , † January 1, 2014 in Munich ) was a German sculptor and university professor .
Life
Koch came from a family of wood and stone sculptors. From 1938 to 1942 he attended the master craftsman school in Kaiserslautern, where he learned the craft of sculpting as a student of Otto Rumpf . In 1942 he was drafted into military service. Towards the end of the Second World War he was taken prisoner by the Soviets, from which he did not return until 1954. In the same year he began studying art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich , where he studied sculpture with Josef Henselmann . After four years, Koch took over as head of the metalworking workshop within the bronze foundry. In 1964 he became a teacher for ore casting. From 1975 to 1990 he was a professor of sculpture at the Munich Art Academy. Erich Koch lived in Schwabing .

During his student days, Erich Koch mainly created wood and stone sculptures. Metal sculptures, especially those made of bronze, have been the focus of his artistic work since the 1960s. The representation of the human being is its main theme. The spectrum ranges from portraits and torsos to the representation of whole bodies. Animal figures are also created. In the opinion of the art historian Wolfgang Stolte, Koch's “contribution to contemporary sculpture (...) is the convincing attempt, because it is not based on the superficial aspects of the time, at an inner design that determines measure and order”.
Koch's works have been and are shown in numerous exhibitions. They are part of public and private collections. Koch also created sculptures for public spaces. He is a member of several artists' associations, including the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Pfälzer Künstler , the Palatinate Secession and the New Group in Munich, of which he was president from 1986 to 1990.
The sculptor has received several art awards. In 1984 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon in recognition of his artistic work.
