Erich Kresse (born July 23, 1902 in Leipzig , † December 17, 1989 in Wuppertal ) was a German painter and graphic artist and member of the international artist group rbk .

life and work

Erich Kresse settled in Wuppertal in 1936 . He taught painting and graphics at the Werkkunstschule Wuppertal (1948–1972), which had emerged from the “Barmer Kunstgewerbeschule” (1894–1947) and which in turn became the Department of Design and Art at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal in 1972 . Among his students was Irmhild Löffert (later Löffert-Kresse ; * 1936 in Wuppertal), who now works as a freelance painter in Wuppertal.

Kresse has been to various studies in Scotland , East Tyrol and the Eifel , from which he brought, among other things, watercolors and gouaches that are more colorful than his otherwise rather "dark graphics" such as B. showed his monotypes and woodcuts . In East Tyrol he had a studio together with his painter colleague from the artist group rbk , Walter Wohlfeld . Kresse was friends with Otto Dix , to whom he dedicated his painting “Homage to Otto Dix”.

The Wuppertal suspension railway was often the subject of Kresses artistic work.

His work has been exhibited several times; Among other things, he took part in 1970, along with three other "painters of the older generation" from Wuppertal, Ernst Oberhoff , Paul Wellershaus and Walter Wohlfeld, in a group exhibition on the subject of "Landscape" in the Wuppertaler Stadtsparkasse , which in 1968 hosted an exhibition series on " Junge Art ”began. Like the other artists exhibited in January 1970, Kresse was classified as “moderate modernism”.

The Wuppertal suspension railway , which went into operation in 1901 (and was therefore about the same age), attracted Kresse's artistic interest and in his work he often addressed this unique transport structure and Wuppertal landmark. The Stadtsparkasse also organized two solo exhibitions of Kresse's works as part of its successful exhibition series “Art in the Sparkasse”, with the exhibition “The Suspension Railway” in April 1972 dedicated to both the 70th birthday of the suspension railway and the artist's (yet to be) birthday has been. Kresse exhibited drawings, monotypes and woodcuts of his preferred subject .

Kresse had another solo exhibition in honor of his 75th birthday in July and August 1997 in the Sparkasse branch in Wuppertal- Rott , where he showed under the title "Culture in the District" still unknown works that came from his study visits and from his East Tyrolean studio.
