Erich Leo Lehmann

Erich Leo Lehmann (born November 20, 1917 in Strasbourg , † September 12, 2009 in Berkeley ) was an American mathematical statistician .

Life

Lehmann grew up in Frankfurt am Main, fled as a Jew from racial persecution to Switzerland in 1933, where he went to school in Zurich. He studied mathematics at Trinity College, Cambridge for two years and went to the USA in 1940. There he obtained his master’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley , in 1942 , and received his doctorate there in 1946 with Jerzy Neyman (Optimum Tests of a Certain Class of Hypotheses Specifying the Value of a Correlation Coefficient). During World War II, he was an operations analyst for the US Air Force in Guam. In 1942 he became an assistant professor and in 1954 a professor at the University of California, Berkeley. From 1973 to 1976 he headed the statistics faculty. In 1989 he retired.

In 1950 he was Visiting Associate Professor at Columbia University and in 1951 at Stanford University

He made important contributions to nonparametric statistical tests and estimation theory ( theorem of Lehmann-Scheffé with Henry Scheffé (1907–1977), Hodges-Lehmann estimator with Joseph Lawson Hodges ). He also dealt with the history of statistics.

He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1975) and President of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics . He was editor of the Annals of Mathematical Statistics. In 1955, 1966 and 1979 he was a Guggenheim Fellow . In 1988 he received the RA Fisher Award and in 1996 the SS Wilks Award. He was an honorary doctor from the Universities of Leiden and Chicago.
