Erich Metzeltin

Erich Metzeltin (* 9. August 1871 in Berlin , † 18th April 1948 in Hannover ) was a German railroad - engineer .

Life

Erich Metzeltin attended the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Gymnasium in Berlin-Friedrichstadt and from 1890 studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Charlottenburg . In 1894 he passed the first state examination and was appointed government building supervisor ( trainee lawyer in the public building administration). He then passed the engine driver's test and worked for AEG in Berlin. Metzeltin designed electric tram networks and converted horse-drawn trams to electric operation (in Heilbronn , Tbilisi and Santiago de Chile ). In 1898 he passed the second state examination to become a government master builder ( assessor in public building administration). In this rank he worked at the Essen Railway Directorate and the Saarbrücken Railway Directorate and from 1900 at the Hanover Railway Directorate , where he was responsible for the Hannoversche Maschinenbau-AG as an inspection officer . In 1902 he was hired by this company as chief engineer to handle a difficult major order from the East Indian Railway for 54 locomotives. Metzeltin was in charge of locomotive construction for the company until 1924. From 1907 to 1924 he was a member of the board of directors , then a member of the supervisory board until 1932 .

In 1904, Erich Metzeltin had an idea that would shape the name of the company in the future. The previous telegram address was Maschinenfabrik . Since this address contained more than 10 letters, it was counted as two words and cost twice the fee. Metzeltin therefore introduced the acronym Hanomag .

During the First World War, Metzeltin took over the lectures on railway construction from Ludwig Troske at the Technical University of Hanover for three years .

In 1918 Metzeltin initiated the General Locomotive Standards Committee , of which he remained chairman until his death. In 1924 the German Standards Committee appointed him to its presidium. Erich Metzeltin wrote extensive specialist literature on the technical history of the railways in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

His son Günter Hermann Metzeltin (1906–2004) was an antiquarian and also an author of specialist railway books. The Romanist Michael Metzeltin and the alpinist Silvia Metzeltin are his grandchildren. In 1982, the library of the German Museum of Technology in Berlin acquired Günter Metzeltin's extensive literary collection on the history and development of the railroad. It also included large parts of his father Erich Metzeltin's historical book inventory.

In 1907, Erich Metzeltin joined the Deutsche Maschinentechnische Gesellschaft (DMG) and was made an honorary member in 1941.
