Silvia Metzeltin

Silvia Metzeltin (* 1938 in Lugano ) is a Swiss - Italian geologist , alpinist , expedition mountaineer and author of books and documentaries.

Life

Silvia Metzeltin was born in Lugano, her father was German, her mother came from Pula in today's Croatia. The railway engineer Erich Metzeltin was her grandfather. After completing her commercial training, she studied geology at the University of Milan . After completing her studies in 1972, she worked for ten years as an assistant at the university's geological institute and did her doctorate. She then worked as a freelance journalist for Radio Svizzera Italiana .

At fourteen, she began climbing in Ticino , a passion she shared with her Italian husband Gino Buscaini . Even as the first rope to do their most difficult rock, ice and combined routes and first ascents, etc. a. in the Alps , in the Dolomites , in the Himalayas ( Zanskar and Garhwal ), in the USA , in the Andes and in Patagonia . She undertook 16 expeditions to Patagonia. With her husband, she documented history, geography, fauna, flora and the history of climbing in Patagonia.

Silvia Metzeltin is a member of the Club Accademico Italiano, the Austrian Alpine Club , the Groupe de Haute Montagne , the Alpine Club and Rendez-vous Hautes Montagnes , an international association of female mountaineers. Early on, she was committed to the emancipation of women for ethical principles in alpinism. For the Club Alpino Italiano she was a delegate at the UIAA .

She is the author and co-author of numerous films and books, including her autobiography Alpinismo a tempo pieno . In 1996 she was honored with the King Albert Mountain Award .
