Erich Rügheimer (born February 16, 1926 in Nuremberg ; † February 24, 2007 ) was a German surgeon and anesthetist .

Professional becoming

The outbreak of World War II prevented the high school graduate from studying. Only after returning from the war could he start studying medicine at the University of Erlangen in 1946 . After completing his studies in 1951, he obtained his license to practice medicine .

With Professor Otto Goetze at the Surgical Clinic of the University Clinic Erlangen , he received his doctorate in 1953 with the subject of the possibilities of preoperative determination of the ability to operate with the help of spirography . His surgical training took place as part of his work as a scientific assistant.

Then he moved on to the field of anesthesiology. Here he qualified as a specialist in 1956. In 1958 he also obtained his license to practice surgery . Two years later, he was appointed senior physician at the surgical clinic. In 1960 he passed his habilitation in the field of anesthesiology with the text The importance of vagus transection for pulmonary complications after high esophageal resection .

He was appointed head of the department for anesthesiology at the surgical university clinic Erlangen-Nürnberg in 1966, which was also associated with the position of associate professor. From 1970 to 1994 he was full professor of anesthesiology and director of the institute for anesthesiology. He was succeeded in 1995 by Jürgen Schüttler (* 1953). In addition, from 1974 to 1979 he performed the duties of a dean of the medical faculty, which was also associated with the duties of a construction officer from 1980 to 1992. In 1980 and 1981 he also held the position of Executive Director of the University Hospital.

Social functions

Outside the university, he was president of the German Society for Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine (DGAI) from 1973 to 1974 and from 1979 to 1980. At the German Research Foundation (DFG), he worked as an expert reviewer from 1984 to 1992. In 1980 he hosted the 7th World Congress of Anesthesia Societies as President in Hamburg , which at the same time meant international recognition of his professional work. This congress was and has remained the only one of its kind in Germany.

He also made himself available to the Federal Ministry of Defense from 1979 to 1998 on the Defense Medical Advisory Board. He was a member of the ADAC medical college from 1978 to 2001.

Scientific activities

He dealt with both scientific problems and experimental questions in the field of clinical pathophysiology . One of the focal points of his tasks was the treatment of acute lung failure and the control of the shock after sepsis and / or trauma .

To this end, he developed various clinical methods for the use of devices for ventilation and the associated respiratory therapy. He also dealt with the related issues of prolonged intubation , tracheotomy , tetanus and electronic anesthesia .

He also delved into the further development of anesthesia, where his commitment as a “lighthouse function” was particularly praised. The problems of monitoring, the waking up phase after the anesthesia , the preparation of the anesthesia, the problems of nutrition and further questions of anesthesia occupied him, whereby the question of the safety of the use of anesthesia always remained topical and required adapted concepts.
