Erich Zeiss (born January 6, 1894 in Dresden-Loschwitz , † March 30, 1975 in Wangen im Allgäu ) was a German ophthalmologist.

Career

As the grandson of the mechanic and entrepreneur Carl Zeiss , Erich Zeiss realized the surgical ambitions of his father Roderich Zeiss (1850-1919), who was no longer able to do so because of his war injuries of 1870/71.

Zeiss studied at the Universities of Zurich and Kiel between 1912 and 1923 , interrupted by his participation in the First World War as a volunteer . He began his ophthalmological training under Franz Schieck (1876–1941) and Clausen in Halle and received his doctorate in 1924 with a thesis on the development of glioma rosettes . In 1928 he moved to Ernst Hertel (1870–1943) in Leipzig , where he developed a projection co-ordimeter. From 1930 to 1932 he carried out extensive studies on the nystagmus of miners in the Ruhr area and Upper Silesia and completed his habilitation with the thesis Comparative underground studies on miners nystagmus . He undertook more than 150 underground trips. In 1935 he became senior physician from Schieck in Würzburg and in 1939 senior physician in Münster under Oswald Marchesani , until he had to go into military service.

After his return he headed the University Eye Clinic in Münster , in 1947 he became head of the Dortmund City Eye Clinic until he retired in 1960. He withdrew to the Lake Constance region and built up an archive about his grandfather. To celebrate the 150th birthday of Carl Zeiss , the biography and the family history were published.
