Erich von Prittwitz and Gaffron

Erich von Prittwitz and Gaffron (born October 4, 1888 in Marbach an der Lauter , † 1969 ) was a German cultural functionary and spa and spa administration official.

Life

family

Erich von Prittwitz came from the old, widely ramified Silesian noble family Prittwitz and was the son of the royal Prussian Colonel Arwed von Prittwitz and Gaffron and Sarah nee. Freiin Schott von Schottenstein . The diplomat and politician Friedrich von Prittwitz and Gaffron was his brother.

His first marriage was to Jeanne Maria Heuschmann. They had a daughter. Martha Agnes Büttner (1906–1993) was his second wife.

Career

After attending the Hohenbaden high school in Baden-Baden , von Prittwitz and Gaffron studied classical philology , history , classical archeology and music at the universities of Bonn , Munich and Heidelberg . In 1906 he became a member of the Corps Borussia Bonn . After graduating as Dr. phil. he went on study trips to Italy, Greece and Russia from 1912 to 1914. During the First World War he worked for the civil administration in Brussels from 1915 to 1917 and at the German embassy in Bern from 1917 to 1919 .

In 1925 he became a member of the board of directors of the Carnegie Institute in Paris, the European headquarters of the Carnegie Foundation , in 1927 a member of the board of trustees of the German University of Politics in Berlin and in 1937 assistant to the general manager of the Deutsche Oper Berlin .

After the Second World War he went from Berlin to Baden-Baden , where he rebuilt the spa and spa administration as director . In 1952 he succeeded in engaging Herbert von Karajan with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra for a guest performance in Baden-Baden.
