Erik Peter Verlinde (born January 21, 1962 in Woudenberg ) is a Dutch physicist who specializes in string theory , quantum gravity and conformal field theories.

Life

Verlinde attended high school in Utrecht and then studied from 1980 at the University of Utrecht , where he studied with Gerardus' t Hooft and Bernard de Wit and received his doctorate in 1988 ("Conformal field theory and its application to strings"). He then worked with Edward Witten at the Institute for Advanced Study until 1993 , where he worked on quantum gravity and string theory. He then worked at the theory department of CERN and also taught at the University of Utrecht. In 1999 he became a professor at Princeton University . He has been a professor at the University of Amsterdam since 2002 , where he has headed a string theory group with Jan de Boer and Robbert Dijkgraaf since 2003.

From him comes the Verlinde formula in the conformal field theory , which he developed in his dissertation, and the Verlinde algebra.

In 2009, he developed the concept of gravity as entropy - force ( Entropic gravity ), which on a thermodynamic interpretation of the gravity of Ted Jacobson founded (1995).

In 1992 he became a research fellow of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation ( Sloan Research Fellow ).

He is the twin brother of the string theorist Herman Verlinde , with whom he also worked.
