Erika Tophoven
Erika Tophoven (born May 17, 1931 in Dessau ) is a German translator and author .
Life
Erika Schöningh grew up in East Friesland due to the war. She studied English and French and graduated as a translator from English. In 1956 she traveled to Paris and met Elmar Tophoven , who also translated Samuel Beckett into German in his various activities . From then on, Schöningh was involved in the translation work, reading their results to Beckett and discussing them with him. They married and had two sons. Erika Tophoven translated, sometimes together with her husband, novels, plays and radio plays from English and French, primarily works by Samuel Beckett and Nathalie Sarraute , as well as Hélène Cixous , Agota Kristof , Victor Segalen and Georges Simenon . At the NWDR she moderated three programs.
Elmar Tophovens and her perseverance led to the establishment of the European Translators College in Straelen in 1978.
After Elmar Tophoven's and Beckett's deaths in 1989, she moved to Berlin. She wrote a book about Beckett's relationship with Germany and his trip to Germany in 1936.
