Discover Qerimaj
Erkand Qerimaj (born August 10, 1988 in Shkodra , Albania) is an Albanian weightlifter . He became the European middleweight duel champion in 2014 .
Career
Erkand Qerimaj started lifting weights as a teenager in Shkodra. He belongs to the sports club Vllaznia Shkodra . He was introduced to international championships very early on by the Albanian Weightlifting Association. He started in April 2003 for the first time at the European Senior Championships in Loutraki, Greece. He started it in the bantamweight and achieved in a duel 212.5 kg (92.5-120), with which he took 12th place. He won his first medals at the 2004 European Junior Championships (age group U 17) in Stavanger. He started there in featherweight and achieved in a duel 262.5 kg (117.5-145). These achievements brought him the bronze medal both in the duel and in the individual disciplines of tearing and pushing.
In the junior area (age groups U 17 and U 20), Erkand Qerimaj was very successful at world and European championships until 2008. He won a total of 13 medals between 2005 and 2008. Twice he was also junior world champion (U 20) in 2006 in Hangzhou / China in pushing the lightweight with 175 kg and in 2007 in Prague (U 20) in pushing the middleweight with 191 kg.
In 2008 he also started at the Olympic Games in Beijing. He achieved there in the middleweight duel 341 kg (154-187) and finished 13th with this performance. In 2009 he was in Bucharest in middleweight with 342 kg (152-190) Vice European Champion in a duel and with his shock performance European Champion. At the 2009 World Championships in Goyang / China, he came in middleweight to 349 kg (156-193) and came in 7th place in a duel. At the 2010 European Championships in Minsk, he won a bronze medal in the middleweight division with his duel performance of 344 kg (154-190) and his performance in pushing. At the 2010 World Championships in Antalya, he increased in a duel to 351 kg (155-196). That is the best duel performance he has ever achieved in an international championship. But he did not win medals at this world championship.
He was not very successful in 2011 and 2012. At the 2011 European Championships in Kazan, he achieved a personal best in the snatch with 157 kg, but in the subsequent push he made three failed attempts, so that he remained unplaced without a duel. At the 2011 World Championships in Paris he came in middleweight only to 338 kg (152-186) and thus only reached 11th place. At the European Championships in 2012 in Antalya he achieved in the middleweight duel 348 kg (158-190), with which he took 1st place in the duel rating and jerking. However, when his doping sample was subsequently checked, he tested positive. The European championship titles in duels and jerks were stripped from him and he was banned by the world weightlifting association IMF from April 12, 2012 to July 12, 2013. He also missed participation in the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
In October 2013, after the doping ban had expired, he started at the World Championships in Wrocław. He tied there in middleweight to the level of performance that he had before the ban and achieved 346 kg (155-191) in a duel, which brought him to 6th place in a duel. He did not win individual medals. In April 2014 he was then European champion in one-on-one and jerking in Tel Aviv. He achieved there in a duel 349 kg (155-194), with which he achieved the same duel performance as his compatriot Daniel Godelli . Godelli was 20 g heavier than Erkand Qerimaj at the official weighing.
