Erkki Juhani Kurenniemi (born July 10, 1941 in Hämeenlinna ; † May 1, 2017 in Helsinki ) was a Finnish pioneer of electronic music.

life and work

Erkki Kurenniemi was born in southern Finland in 1941. His mother was a children's author, his father a chemist and mathematician. Erkki Kurenniemi studied mathematics, theoretical physics, philosophy and nuclear physics .

Erik Tawastjerna set up an electronic music studio at the University of Helsinki . Due to the extremely tight financial resources, the equipment should be built on site. 1961 won Tawastjerna Erkki Kurenniemi for this task. Instead of being paid, Kurenniemi was given permission to use the developed devices for his own works, and he was given a great deal of freedom of action.

Young musicologists from Finland: Ilpo Mansnerus (1943–), Erkki Kurenniemi (1941–2017), Ilpo Saunio (1939–1999) and Seppo Heikinheimo (1938–1997).

The studio maintained contacts with other avant-garde composers, for example Reijo Jyrkiäinen , Henrik Otto Donner , Bengt Johansson , Erkki Salmenhaara and Karlheinz Stockhausen .

Kurenniemi built the "Integrated Synthesizer" (1964 to 1967), "Andromatic" (1968) and the "Electric Quartet", an instrument to be played collectively, which he developed (1967 to 1968) for MA Numminen and his underground band Sähkokvaretti.

At the beginning of the 1970s he founded "Digelius" and started the DIMI (Digital Music Instrument) series. The video synthesizer DIMI-S (1972), also known as the "group sexophone", generates sounds through fluctuations in the electrical impulses of the four players who hold electrodes in their hands.

His experiments range from media art , music and happenings to experimental short films .

Kurenniemi developed robots for Sampo Rosenlew in the 1970s . He worked for Nokia in the 1980s . Kurenniemi was responsible for the exhibition planning in the Heureka (Science Center) from 1987 to 1999 .

Erkki Kurreniemi exhibited at the dOCUMENTA (13) in Kassel, the Kunsthal Aarhus in Denmark and the Kiasma in Helsinki.
