The Krabat Mill Schwarzkollm , in Upper Sorbian Krabatowy młyn Čorny Chołmc , is a replica of the so-called “Black Mill” used as a tourist cultural center, which is the main scene of the Krabat legend, in particular through the book “ The Black Mill ” by Jurij Brězan and the novel “ Krabat "By Otfried Preußler and the film" Krabat "based on it. The Erlebnishof Krabat-Mühle forms a complex with 6 buildings in the traditional construction of a Lusatian four-sided courtyard and is located on a 10,000 m 2 property at Koselbruch 22 in Schwarzkollm (city of Hoyerswerda , district of Bautzen ).

The building near the current location, the so-called Brösing-Mühle, originally known as the “Black Mill”, burned down completely in 1868. The later rebuilt mill was shut down in 1972 and converted for residential use. Only a private barn remains from the original mill.

aims

The basic idea and background of the project are the maintenance of the regional, in particular the Sorbian customs and the Sorbian language, as well as the stimulation of tourism in the emerging Lusatian Lake District and the Krabat region. The Krabat-Mühle project is intended to help strengthen the village community against the demographic trend and to maintain the infrastructure by preserving the building culture and its tourist use. Further goals are:

  • conveying the crab legend, especially to children and young people;
  • Networking of the life stations of Krabat (places in the Krabat region) on a 90 kilometer Krabat cycle path ;
  • Development and implementation of thematic tours and events;
  • Inclusion of the Krabat saga in the Saxon curriculum (which has been part of the old federal states for a long time).

Creation of the plant

A reconstruction or new construction of the Black Mill has been sought by regional associations and organizations since the beginning of the 1990s, but initially there was a lack of financial resources. With the help of donations, grants and voluntary work, the Schwarzkollm association “Krabatmühle-Schwarzkollm e. V. ”finally on July 10th, 2006 the foundation stone was laid for the construction of the servants' house (hostel for traveling journeyman). The association “Krabatmühle-Schwarzkollm e. V. ”from around 100 members chaired by Tobias Zschieschick. The current second chairwoman of the association, the former mayor of Schwarzkollm, Gertrud Winzer, played a key role in the development of the Krabat mill .

The servants' house was the first building on the grounds of the Krabat mill to be erected with the help of over 100 traveling journeymen who were given board and lodging according to old craft traditions. The servants' house, which then also served as a hostel for the journeymen, and the arcade were completed in 2008.

The foundation stone for the Black Mill was laid on May 19, 2009: For this purpose, a listed barn in Dubring was demolished and rebuilt at the site of the Krabat Mill as the core building of the “Black Mill”. A "mill tower" with historical mill technology and the water wheel were added a short time later. In the mill, the techniques of different types of mills such as grain, (buckwheat) groats, linseed oil and millet mill are demonstrated and historical tools from everyday mill life are exhibited.

The arcade belongs to the farmhouse parlor.

A listed barn, which was moved from Sollschwitz to Schwarzkollm, serves as the “mill barn” .

The buildings are equipped with original props from the film "Krabat". The production company gave this to the Krabatmühle-Schwarzkollm e. V. made available.

In the “magic forest” to the south, various key scenes from the Krabat saga (Wüster Plan, Bäumel's death) are shown and described on information boards on a 450 meter long adventure trail. A toilet facility and a parking lot were also built.

Events

Since 2012 , the Krabat Festival has been held every July at the Krabat-Mühle adventure farm . Every year an open-air cinema event takes place on the grounds of the Krabat mill. Further highlights are farmers' markets, Sorbian weddings, performances by the Sorbian National Ensemble Bautzen .
