Ernesto Pinto-Bazurco Rittler

Ernesto Pinto-Bazurco Rittler (* 1946 in Munich ) is a Peruvian diplomat and lawyer .

Life

He was born as the third child of the Peruvian doctor Ernesto Pinto-Bazurco and his German wife Hildegard Rittler. In Peru he studied literature and humanities , law , political science , diplomacy and international relations . He also completed postgraduate studies in law in Germany and a doctorate in political science in Switzerland.

In the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Peru, Ernesto Pinto-Bazurco Rittler was in charge of the international cooperation department. He was also director of the business development department and director general of the European department.

As a delegate and representative of Peru, Ernesto Pinto-Bazurco Rittler took part in numerous international conferences.

As a diplomat, Ernesto Pinto-Bazurco represented Peru in Germany , the People's Republic of China , Romania , Switzerland and Cuba . There he helped over 10,000 people to leave the country on April 4, 1980 by guaranteeing them asylum in the Peruvian embassy in Havana . The events of the day and the negotiations of the following night initiated the so-called Mariel boat crisis , as a result of which around 125,000 Cubans left the country.

He was awarded the Palmer Prize in 2011 for his commitment to defending human rights in Cuba and was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2016 .
