Ernst August Bertling

Ernst August Bertling (born December 1, 1721 in Osnabrück , † August 10, 1769 in Danzig ) was a German Protestant theologian .

Life

The son of court preacher Rudolf Bertling attended a grammar school in his hometown and studied both philosophy and mathematics at the University of Jena from 1741 to 1743 . He then studied theology at the University of Göttingen ; he completed his studies in 1744 with a master's degree . In 1748 he was offered an extraordinary professorship at the University of Helmstedt . In 1749 he received his doctorate in theology and was appointed full professor of theology in the same year . In the following year he became an adjunct of general superintendent Christoph Timotheus Seidel . In 1753 he became rector of the Academic Gymnasium Danzig as well as its theology professor and pastor of the local St. Trinity Church. The Catholics had tried to oust Bertling, but he had defended the Lutheran Orthodox denomination against the Reformed and the Catholics. He held the office until his death.

The lawyer Justus Möser was one of Bertling's circle of friends .
