Ernst Daube

Ernst Daube (also Sporgel ; born February 9, 1869 in Heukendorf ; † July 15, 1956 in Meuselwitz ) was a German writer and poet .

His dialect, humorous poems (around 200) and stories (around 115) in which he describes life in the Altenburger Land of his time became particularly well known . Daube wrote poetry in the dialect of the Altenburger Land , which is spoken very rarely today.

The pseudonym Sporgel (asparagus - pronounced Schporchel ) is derived from a nickname after his tall stature.

Life

Daube was born in Heukenwalde as the first of ten children of a manor manager and a daughter of a wholesaler and baker. At the age of five the family moved to Braunshain and ran the grandparents' bakery. Daube attended grammar school in Altenburg from 1882 to 1891 .

In 1891 Ernst Daube began studying law, history and literature in Jena and Leipzig . His main interest was in Old High German, Greek and Latin literature. He wrote his first major work with a translation of the Nibelungenlied from Old High German into High German . Daube had an intensive correspondence with Wilhelm Raabe until he died in 1910.

For unknown reasons, Daube broke off this course in 1894 and began his service with the Prussian customs administration .

On July 31, 1897, he married Elisabeth Hinze, who came from Leipzig . From the marriage in 1900 his only child Otto was born.

Daube served customs in Effeld , Cologne , Mainz , Halle (Saale) , Halberstadt , Magdeburg (1902–1920) and Gotha . In Gotha he served as chief customs inspector until his retirement in 1934. Little is known about Daube's service. Soon afterwards he moved to his homeland in Meuselwitz.

Daube was buried in Meuselwitz, where - also as a tribute to his work - his grave is tended to this day.
