Ernst Degasperi
Ernst Degasperi (born May 7, 1927 in Meran ; † July 17, 2011 in Vienna ) was an Austrian artist living in Vienna .
Life
Ernst Degasperi initially trained as a precision mechanic and passed his journeyman's examination in 1945 before starting to study graphics with Paul Kirnig at the Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna. Since 1952 he worked as a freelance graphic designer. In the same year Degasperi married his wife Theresia, together they had a son (* 1955) and a daughter (* 1965). From 1963 Degasperi felt called to be an “artist with religious concerns” ( Art for Peace ).
Degaspari was president of the artist group Die Spirale and a member of the Austrian Writers 'Association , the writers' association Der Kreis and the Concordia press club . In 1979 he was given the professional title of Professor .
In 1985 he founded "My Brother Has Leprosy" as a private initiative to rescue 200 children from a Philippine leprosy station with US $ 300 per child for a period of two years.
Degasperi was buried at the Vienna Central Cemetery .
Works
Since 1963 Degasperi has created over 30 cycles with over 550 pictures and many individual works, which have so far been shown in over 200 solo exhibitions in Europe, America, Africa and Asia. His techniques are very versatile, so he made pen and brush drawings, etchings , lithographs , screen prints , sgraffiti , acrylic paintings, pastel paintings, gouaches and copper smelting.
He draws his inspiration from many regions of the world. He was not only impressed by the rhizomes of the high regions of the Zillertal Alps and Israel with the deserts, Massada, the Dead Sea and the Sinai, he also processed impressions of the concentration camps of the Holocaust (Auschwitz, Majdanek, Treblinka and Mauthausen) and numerous countries in South America (Mexico, Guatemala , Honduras and Peru), Africa (Egypt and South Africa) and Asia (India, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines, where he was particularly interested in the fate of lepers).
Special works are the concrete cast monument "Bereshit Bara" in Gedera in Israel and the numerous sgraffiti Degasperis.
In 1980 the foundation stone was laid for the House of Peace in Eggenburg ( Lower Austria ). On September 10, 1982, it was blessed by Alois Stöger, Auxiliary Bishop, and given its destination by then Governor Siegfried Ludwig .

He created paintings and wall paintings in Vienna, Eggenburg, Crediton ( UK ), Edinburgh (UK).
Works Degasperis are now including in the possession of the Vatican Museums , the graphic collection of the Albertina in Vienna, the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, the Jagiellonian University Library in Krakow, the Museum of History of Religion in Lviv ( Lemberg ) and the Federal Ministry of Education and Arts in Vienna . Collections are also located in several cathedrals and churches.
Degasperi published several books and articles in 17 different languages in magazines and newspapers. He was also involved in television films as well as television and radio reports.
Awards
Ernst Degasperi is the recipient of numerous domestic and foreign orders and has been awarded many prizes. In 1984 the Vatican awarded him the Commander's Cross of the New Year's Eve , and the Republic of Austria the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art, 2nd and 1st class . Degasperi is the recipient of the First State Prize for the most beautiful book in Austria and the "Cardinal Opilio Rossi Medal". In 2003 he was made an honorary citizen of the University of Vienna for his unifying work and the attempt to artistically contribute to an understanding between the monotheistic world religions.
