Life and work

Ehmsen was transferred to the Arnsberg government as a forester in 1884 after training and studying at the Copenhagen Forest Academy as well as employment in East Prussia and Alsace .

During his service in Alsace, he worked for the Vosges Association founded in 1872.

In 1890 he and Karl Féaux de Lacroix founded the Sauerland Tourist Association against the backdrop of the hiking movement , from which the Sauerland Mountain Association emerged in 1891. Ehmsen drafted the statutes and was elected first chairman of the SGV. Ehmsen has given tips on marking hiking trails and has drawn the press' attention to the association and the Sauerland. He used posters to advertise the region and suggested information leaflets about inns and accommodation options. In 1892 he suggested the establishment of a club journal, which should also deal with research into regional history. The magazine “Der Sauerländische Gebirgsbote”, edited by Feaux de Lacroix, arose from this idea. Immediately after Ehmsen's death, thoughts on building a monument in favor of Ehmsen were raised in the paper.

Ehmsen's grave is in the Grossenaspe cemetery .

Others

In Arnsberg , a square and a street are named after Ehmsen. In 1897 the SGV erected the Ehmsendenkmal in his honor . One of the main hiking routes of the SGV, the Ehmsenweg , is named after him.
