He was also a hobby archaeologist and discovered the Hamberger Gräben near Gramastetten in 1935 . From 1934 to 1940 he carried out extensive archaeological investigations on the Kürnberg . He became aware of the prehistoric and early historical monuments of the Kürnberg as early as the 1920s on the occasion of a hike. Since he found the Kürnberg inadequately mentioned in the contemporary specialist literature, he decided to investigate on his own. First excavations brought new knowledge about the construction of the Wallburg at the summit. He was able to verify three different construction stages in the inner ring wall, which he could assign to the Bronze Age , the Iron Age and the Early Middle Ages . The investigation of the outer ring wall revealed two construction stages. After the excavation at the Wallburg was completed, Fietz was entrusted with prospecting the remains of the wall, which should turn out to be the foundations of a Roman watchtower (1936/37). From 1938 he investigated a Bronze Age barrow in the Reingrub at Kürnberg.
