Ernst J. Martin (born September 20, 1900 in Kassel , † March 31, 1967 in Kaldenkirchen ) was a German dendrologist , author , conservationist and dentist .

Life

Ernst Josef Martin was the son of a lawyer from Kassel; he studied dentistry in Würzburg and Freiburg; then he emigrated to the USA , where he worked first in California and later for several years in the Aleutian Islands (chain of islands in Alaska ). On behalf of the state, he conducted dental examinations among the locals in southern New Mexico and among the Eskimos on the islands belonging to Alaska. On returning to Germany, he married the dentist Illa (Sybilla) Kesselburg in 1935, with whom he opened a joint practice in Kaldenkirchen.

Like his wife, he was very interested in botanicals; both began to pursue their dendrological inclinations intensively after the Second World War. In 1947 the Kaldenkirchen border forest burned down completely; what remained was pure sandy soil, which threatened the fields with flying sand. Ernst J. Martin suggested the establishment of the Waldwirtschaftsgemeinschaft Kaldenkirchen (WWG), which took place on November 14, 1949, in which almost all farmers with their approximately 5,000 small forest plots joined forces and helped to organize exemplary reforestation under difficult post-war conditions.

In 1951 the Martin couple founded the Kaldenkirchen Sequoia farm . It had seeds from the giant sequoia tree ( Sequoiadendron giganteum ) sent from the USA . As early as 1953, 1500 two-year-old specimens of the giant sequoia were cared for alongside coastal redwoods ( Sequoia sempervirens ) and other species with the support of the German Research Foundation . One of the research objectives was to examine the possibilities for introducing these trees into German forestry. Today the Sequoia farm is a well-known arboretum with over 600 types of wood. In 1962 he accepted an invitation from the American government to visit the original Sequoia forests of the Sierra Nevada .

The couple had two sons and a daughter, including the author and songwriter Erik Martin and the lawyer and expert Helge Breloer .

Ernst J. Martin was a member of the German Forest Protection Association and a council member of the German Dendrological Society . He died in 1967. In 1983 in Nettetal, the “Dr. Martin Weg ”.
