Ernst Philipp von Gettkandt
Ernst Philipp Gettkandt , von Gettkandt since 1799 (* January 1736 in Prussia; † May 4, 1808 ) was a Prussian major general and chief of the hussar regiment No. 1 .
Life
origin
All that is known of his parents is that his father was a Protestant cantor .
Military career
Gettkandt went to Hussar Regiment No. 5 on September 1, 1756 . During the Seven Years' War he took part in the battles near Groß-Jägersdorf , Zorndorf , Kay , as well as in the battles near Körlin, Schivelbein, Wahlstatt, Gustyn, Kosten and the siege of Stralsund. In 1759 he was promoted to sergeant and on December 10, 1760 he rose to the ranks of officers and became a cornet . On January 21, 1762 he became a second lieutenant in the regiment. Shortly after the war, on December 5, 1765, he became a first lieutenant , on November 25, 1770, staff commander, and on May 8, 1778, captain and squadron chief . In the War of the Bavarian Succession in 1778/79 he fought in the battle near Dolland. On December 2, 1786 he was made major with a patent from November 24, 1786 and on January 9, 1794 lieutenant colonel . In the campaign against Poland in 1794/95 he took part in the battle at Gawricky. On February 4, 1795 he was battalion commander and received on April 17, 1795 the order Pour le Mérite for Gawricky. On January 1, 1796, he was promoted to colonel and on June 26, 1796, Gettkandt was promoted to regimental commander.
On January 26, 1799 he was raised to the nobility. On May 15, 1803 he was appointed chief of the Hussar Regiment "von L'Estocq" and on May 20, 1803 he was promoted to major general with a patent from May 24, 1803. He still took part in the Fourth Coalition War. Retired August 1807. Gettkandt was supposed to receive a pension of 1000 thalers, but after the Prussian defeat he only received half pay and died on May 4, 1808.

Gettkandt was married to Lene Marie Fiedler († November 30, 1831 in Königsberg ). The couple had several children including:
- Ferdinand Philipp (* 1787), 1805 lieutenant in the dragoon regiment "von Prussia"
- Karoline Henriette (April 4, 1783 - November 16, 1864) ⚭ February 18, 1803 Johann von der Poll (January 9, 1777 - January 13, 1858), lieutenant in Hussar Regiment No. 5, later in Dutch Diensten (Jan van de Poll) became major general.
- Ernestine
- Karl Wilhelm (born August 31, 1793), Junker in the Hussar Regiment No. 1
- Amelie
The future general had asked King Friedrich II twice in vain for a marriage permit. As a result, all children were born out of wedlock. Only King Friedrich Wilhelm II legitimized the children on February 16, 1797, but refused the request for a nobility. His successor Friedrich Wilhelm III. raised him to the nobility in 1799.
