Ernst Rentrop (born December 20, 1868 in Unna , † April 3, 1937 in Cologne ) was a Protestant pastor and superintendent .

Life

Rentrop studied Protestant theology in Bonn , Halle and Koblenz and was ordained in Barmen in 1894 .

His first positions as assistant preacher took him to Andernach and Cologne-Deutz , from where he came to Königswinter , when the local parish was just beginning to become independent. There he was introduced as a pastor. The small community quickly became a financially independent community and Rentrop set up a nurses' station.

In 1922 Rentrop was elected superintendent of the Bonn church district. He initially held this office until 1934, when, as pastor of the Confessing Church, he resisted attempts to bring the teaching and organization of the German Evangelical Church (DEK) into line during the Nazi era , which is why he was suspended from the office of superintendent. Due to a formal error, the impeachment had to be reversed, but the condition that Rentrop u. a. had to withdraw the Barmer declaration , which he did not. Because of the backing of the church district, he remained in office until his death in 1937.

family

In 1897 Rentrop married Ida Kreutz, with whom he had three sons. He and his wife donated some windows (including the altar window) as well as the altarpiece of the Christ Church in Koenigswinter, which is partly immediately apparent through inscriptions. The Ernst-Rentrop-Haus , a community center of the Protestant parish of Königswinter, is named after him.

Rentrop was one of the founders and, until his death, deputy chairman of the working group for the care of the homeland (later the Heimatverein Siebengebirge eV ), which brought the Siebengebirgsmuseum in Königswinter into being.
