Schleith's extraordinary talent for drawing was encouraged by his teacher in the village school, and the pastor also ensured that he could attend the trade school in Schopfheim in 1886 . From then on I went to the arts and crafts school in Karlsruhe . Here, like Hermann Daur from Lörrach , he studied with Franz Sales Meyer and Max Laeuger .

From 1892 he was a master student with Robert Poetzelberger , Hans Thoma and Ernst Schurth .

In 1900 he was appointed director of a private drawing school for women in Halle (Saale) . This was followed by a study visit to Munich from 1906 to 1907.

From 1910 to 1912 he had a studio in Karlsruhe, which he had to give up due to illness. He returned to the Wiesental . He was a soldier from 1914 to 1916. In 1919 he moved into a studio in the Wieslet school and worked as a portraitist and landscape painter, then mainly as a draftsman.

His drawings are photographic true to nature and dashed and dotted with a fine-grain grid. He was able to represent light and dark in the finest nuances.

Appreciation

Since May 2011, his studio, the Ernst-Schleith-Stube, has been reopened in the attic of the school in Wieslet.

The Neighborhood Primary School Steinen-Weitenau-Wieslet in the Steinem district of Weitenau neighboring Wieslet is named after Ernst Schleith.
