Ernst Wilhelm Handschumacher (born November 30, 1924 in Rheydt ; † November 14, 2014 at Gut Reichenstein , Monschau ) was a German lawyer . From 1970 to 1979 he was mayor of Meerbusch .

Life

Ernst Wilhelm Handschumacher was the son of the lawyer and Lord Mayor of Gladbach-Rheydt , Johannes Handschumacher (1887–1957), and Emilie Antoniette Auguste Meyer (1894–1944). He studied law at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-University of Bonn and received his doctorate with a thesis on the Condominium Act to Dr. iur. He continued to run the law firm founded by his father after his father's death in 1957. He was a member of the management board, later chairman of the supervisory board of ARAG Allg. Legal protection insurance AG in Düsseldorf. The Republic of Liberia appointed him honorary consul .

Handschumacher was the first mayor of the city of Meerbusch, founded in 1970, from 1970 to 1979 . With the municipal reorganization, the six-year-old city was to be dissolved again in 1976; Mayor Handschumacher successfully resisted.

Together with his wife Helma, he acquired the former Reichenstein monastery near Monschau in 1973 and was committed to the renovation of the monastery church and the monastery buildings. In 2006 he transferred the monastery complex to the French monastery Notre-Dame de Bellaigue with the aim of repopulating as a monastery. On September 22nd, 2008 the keys were handed over to the St. Benedict Association .

In 1972, Handschumacher was appointed Knight of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher by Cardinal Grand Master Maximilien Cardinal de Fürstenberg and invested in the Aachen Imperial Cathedral on December 9, 1972 by Lorenz Cardinal Jaeger , Grand Prior of the German Lieutenancy, and Hermann Josef Abs , Lieutenant in Germany .
