The British Embassy in Tehran was stormed on the morning of November 29, 2011. A group of Iranian demonstrators broke into the area of the British Embassy in Tehran , setting fire to and devastating offices.

procedure

The UK embassy on Ferdowsi Avenue in central Tehran was besieged by more than three hundred demonstrators on the morning of November 29, 2011. According to the state news agency IRNA , the demonstrators gathered in front of the embassy because they wanted to protest against the murder of the Iranian nuclear expert Majid Shahriari exactly a year ago . In addition to Israel and the USA, they also blame Great Britain for the scientist's death.

Slogans like "Death for England" or "Englishman, disappears" were chanted. About 150 police officers were deployed to protect the embassy. Nevertheless, at least 200 members of the government- loyal Basij militia stormed the premises. This was apparently facilitated by the fact that some of the police intervened late or not at all. Incendiary devices and stones flew. The Union Jack was burned several times.

Later, riots broke out at a British school in a northern part of Tehran, and several hostages were briefly taken.

causes

The main cause of the incident are the sanctions imposed by the United States , Canada and the United Kingdom on November 22, 2011 in connection with the Iranian nuclear program . As a result, the Iranian parliament decided on November 27, 2011 with 179 for and 4 against with eleven abstentions, in addition to reducing diplomatic relations with the United Kingdom to a minimum, the British Ambassador Dominick John Chilcott , who only took office in October 2011 to show. The Iranian Guardian Council approved the draft the following Monday.

consequences

British Foreign Secretary William Hague called on Tehran to comply with its international obligations to protect embassies, and threatened serious consequences. The British embassy has been closed until further notice.

In response to the storming, the UK government requested all staff at the Iranian embassy in London to leave the country within 48 hours. The incumbent Foreign Minister of the Federal Republic of Germany, Guido Westerwelle, summoned the Iranian ambassador and declared that the incident on the embassy premises was contrary to international law and unacceptable.

France and the United States also criticized the incident. The Security Council of the United Nations pointed out the obligation under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961, which provides for the protection of diplomatic and consular institutions. For security reasons, Norway also closed its embassy in Tehran, but leaves the staff in the country until further notice.

Eleven Iranian occupiers of the Iranian embassy who were arrested by police for violently entering the British embassy were released on November 30, 2011 without giving any reason.
