Tuğrul

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tuğrul is a Turkish male given name and referred to in Old Turkish (former pronunciation: Toghril , DMG Toïrïl ) a bird of prey, which Mahmud al-Kāschgharī described as "larger than a Sonkur (another species of raptor )". Possibly the crested goshawk (Accipiter trivirgatus) was meant by Toghril . This bird of prey was used for hunting purposes. The name of the Magyar mythical creature Turul probably goes back to the old Turkish name for this bird of prey. The first name also appears as a family name. Another form of the name is Ertuğrul .
