life and work

Erwin Frey studied law at the University of Basel and received his doctorate in 1930 under August Simonius . He then worked for many years as a youth prosecutor in Basel . On the basis of extensive practical case studies, Frey's main work The Early Criminal Recidivist Criminal was created in 1951 , which became a milestone in the development of modern criminology in Europe.

Entrusted with teaching assignments since 1948, Erwin Frey completed his habilitation in 1951 on the reform of the law of measures against early criminals at the law and political science faculty of the University of Zurich . As early as 1952 he was elected associate professor and a year later professor for criminal law , criminal procedural law and criminology. From 1962 to 1964 he was the dean of the faculty . Due to conflicts over Frey's lessons, which were increasingly perceived as too theoretical and abstract, as well as for health reasons, Erwin Frey retired early in 1969 .

As a member of the relevant expert commission, Erwin Frey played a key role in the reorganization of the system of penalties and measures that the revision of the Swiss Penal Code in 1971 brought with it.
