Erwin Sander (born March 5, 1892 in Berlin-Neukölln , † December 7, 1962 in Bamberg ) was a German officer , last lieutenant general in World War II .

Life

Sander joined the 1st Posensche Field Artillery Regiment No. 20 on October 1, 1910 as a flag junior . He served in the 3rd East Prussian Field Artillery Regiment No. 79 during the First World War. He also served as a battery officer in the 8th Army .

After the war ended, Sander switched to the police force and worked at the Potsdam-Eiche Police School and the Brandenburg Police School, among others . As a major in the police force, he worked in the police administration in Berlin from October 1, 1929.

In 1935 Sander was accepted into the Wehrmacht as a lieutenant colonel . He first belonged to the staff of the 1st Panzer Division in Weimar and from 1936 to the Artillery Regiment 73 and then to the Artillery Regiment 74 . On November 10, 1938, he became the commander of the 80 Artillery Regiment in Cottbus . On January 8, 1942, Sander was appointed commander of the 170th Infantry Division . After he relinquished his command in 1943, he became commander of the 245th Infantry Division .

On April 30, 1945, with the 245th Infantry Division, he led the counter-attack against the British troops who had crossed the Elbe near Lauenburg and were advancing further north.

On May 15, 1945, on the orders of the Commander-in-Chief of the British Forces, Field Marshal Montgomery , he wrote to the soldiers under his command at the front.
