The selected player from East Prussia and the Southwest Association joined VfB Königsberg as a 9-year-old , for whom he was already a 16-year-old at the side of players like Kurt Baluses , Kurt Krause or Kurt Lingnau occasionally in the club's first team for the won East Prussia Championship and then was allowed to participate in a game for the German championship in 1944. The VfB Königsberg itself was Gaumeister East Prussia five times in a row between 1940 and 1944 . Information according to which Erwin Scheffler played in the first team of VfB Königsberg before 1943 may be based on a mix-up with his older brother Helmut Scheffler .

After the war, Erwin Scheffler came to Schleswig-Holstein , where he first joined Rot-Weiß Niebüll and then Itzehoer SV . With Itzehoer SV, Scheffler became Schleswig-Holstein champion and rose in 1950 - again at the side of Kurt Krause, Kurt Lingnau and player-coach Kurt Baluses - in the northern football league . In the top league round 1950/51, the right winger and scorer completed 31 games and scored 16 goals, but the ISV could not manage to stay in the league and was relegated to the amateur league.

In 1951 Erwin Scheffler received an offer from 1. FC Kaiserslautern , for which the right winger then scored 107 goals in 160 games in the Oberliga Südwest up to 1959. Scheffler made his debut in the Oberliga Südwest on August 26, 1951 in a 4-2 home win against Mainz 05, where he was also able to excel as a goalscorer. In 1953 Erwin Scheffler became German football champions with the Palatine in the final against VfB Stuttgart , which was defeated 4-1. In the 78th minute, Scheffler himself contributed a goal to the success - the other goals were scored by Fritz Walter , Karl Wanger and Willi Wenzel . In the two following years it was enough with final defeats against Hannover 96 (1: 5 1954) and Rot-Weiss Essen (3: 4 1955) "only" to the German runner-up. With the game on April 19, 1959 at Borussia Neunkirchen - 2: 4 defeat in the Ellenfeldstadion ; In the 7th minute he had brought the “Red Devils” 1-0 up - Erwin Scheffler said goodbye to high-class football after nine rounds at Lauterern. In addition to his 191 league appearances with 123 goals, he also has 22 games in the final round of the German soccer championship with a further nine goals.

After finishing his active playing career, Scheffler took over the training of the 1. FCK amateurs. His main job was as a post office clerk and, on the side, ran a Toto lottery and cleaning service with his wife.

Erwin Scheffler was active as a member of the honorary council for 1. FC Kaiserslautern until his death .
