The Archdiocese of Lanzhou ( Latin : Archidioecesis Lanceuvensis ) is a Roman Catholic Archdiocese based in Lanzhou in the People's Republic of China .
history
Pope Leo XIII. founded the Apostolic Vicariate Gansu on June 21, 1878 out of territory of the Apostolic Vicariate Shaanxi . It took the name, Vicariate Apostolic North Gansu , on April 28, 1905.
On March 8, 1922, it received territories from the Apostolic Vicariate South Gansu and at the same time took the name, Apostolic Vicariate West Gansu . It took the name, Apostolic Vicariate Lanchowfu , on December 3, 1924. With the Apostolic Constitution Quotidie Nos it was elevated to the Metropolitan Archbishopric on April 11, 1946 .
In the early 1980s, secret bishop Philip Yang Li-bo was consecrated, who died on February 15, 1998 at the age of 80 after serving nearly 30 years in prison. In January 2003 the secret bishop Joseph Han Zhi-hai was consecrated, who through an open letter called for the unity of the official and secret churches and is recognized by Rome.
It lost parts of its territory in favor of the establishment of the following dioceses:
- April 28, 1905 to the Apostolic Vicariate of South Gansu ;
- May 25, 1936 to the Kiangchow Apostolic Prefecture ;
- February 4, 1937 to the Apostolic Prefecture of Xining .
