The Escola Superior de Belas Artes do Porto (German: University of the Arts of Porto) was an art college in the northern Portuguese city ​​of Porto . Today it is integrated into the University of Porto as an art faculty .

Originally designed as a residential building in 1873, the building has belonged to the Portuguese Ministry of Education since 1949 at the latest and has been used for art ever since. It has been a listed building since 2007.

history

Systematic drawing lessons were first introduced in Porto in 1780 to support the city's manufacturing industry. In 1802 the academy for drawing lessons ( Aula de Desenho ) was opened, with 120 students enrolled. In his opening speech, the painter Vieira Portuense spoke out in favor of a much more comprehensive, theoretically based training.

Only after the Liberal Revolution in 1822 and the following Portuguese civil war was the Academia Portuense de Belas Artes established in 1836. The courses in painting, sculpture, architecture and a first drawing course were offered. At the end of the 19th century, the school was renamed Escola Portuense de Belas Arte .

As development progressed and after extensive expansion of the range of courses, the school was called Escola Superior de Belas Artes (German: University of the Arts) from 1950 after moving to the current building and was henceforth an official university . In addition to the drawing rooms and classrooms, it now had workshops for ceramics, glass painting, carpet art, engraving, stone processing, etc. a. The communication design course was added in the 1970s.

In 1979, the architecture course became an independent chair and the University of Porto was added. In 1994 the Escola Superior de Belas Artes do Porto was integrated as a whole into the University of Porto and has since been called Faculdade de Belas Artes (Faculty of Fine Arts).

The university produced a large number of important artists and thus significantly shaped the development of architecture, painting and sculpture in Portugal in particular. The Porto School is considered to be the most formative movement in modern Portuguese architecture and, with two Pritzker Prize winners, also gained international importance.

The country's sculpture also owes its special progress and important names to the school.
